Hay Fever Relief: Treatment Options & Tips for Spring

As the days get warmer and flowers begin to bloom, many of us look forward to spending more time outdoors. Unfortunately, spring also marks the start of hay fever season, and for many New Zealanders, that means weeks or even months of sneezing, itchy eyes, and a constantly runny nose.

The good news? Hay fever can be managed, and the team at Vogeltown Pharmacy is here to help.

What is Hay Fever?

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to airborne allergens such as:

  • Tree pollen

  • Grass pollen

  • Weed pollen

  • Mould spores

  • Dust mites

  • Animal dander

When your immune system mistakes these harmless particles for a threat, it releases histamine and other chemicals that trigger allergy symptoms.

Common Symptoms

Hay fever symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Sneezing

  • Runny or blocked nose

  • Itchy nose, throat, ears or roof of the mouth

  • Red, watery or itchy eyes

  • Post-nasal drip

  • Coughing

  • Fatigue or poor sleep caused by congestion

These symptoms can affect work, school, exercise, and everyday enjoyment of spring.

Tips to Reduce Your Exposure

While it's impossible to avoid pollen completely, a few simple habits can make a real difference:

  • Keep windows closed on high pollen days.

  • Shower and change your clothes after spending time outdoors.

  • Dry washing indoors during peak pollen season if possible.

  • Wear sunglasses outside to help protect your eyes from pollen.

  • Vacuum regularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter if you have one.

Finding the Right Treatment

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for hay fever, but several options are available.

Antihistamines Modern non-drowsy antihistamines are often a good first option for sneezing, itching and a runny nose, and can work well when taken regularly during allergy season rather than waiting until symptoms become severe.

Steroid Nasal Sprays For people with ongoing or moderate to severe hay fever, steroid nasal sprays can be a good option. They reduce inflammation inside the nose and work best when started before symptoms become too troublesome.

Eye Drops If itchy, watery eyes are your biggest problem, allergy eye drops can provide quick relief and help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

Saline Nasal Sprays and Rinses Saline sprays or nasal rinses help wash away pollen and can reduce congestion without medication.

When to See Your Pharmacist

If your symptoms are affecting your sleep, work, or quality of life, don't just put up with them. Our pharmacists can help you choose a suitable treatment based on your symptoms, age, and other medications you may be taking.

If your symptoms are severe, persistent, or you're unsure whether it's hay fever or another condition, we can also advise whether you should see your GP.
